Walks Programme August 2010
Date: Sunday 1st Walk: The Sugar Loaf walk Area: Black Mountains Distance: 6miles (10km). Grade: Moderate
Walk Description: Starting from near the old market town of Abergavenny, we’ll walk through a lovely old Beech wood before gradually ascending the distinctive peak of the Sugar loaf, (596m). It’s a little steep as we approach the summit but nothing to difficult. We’ll have lunch on the summit and admire the views down the Usk valley and the Bristol channel, before beginning our descent via the Deri ridge and its ancient Welsh oak woods.
Date: Friday 6th Walk: Pen Cerrig Calch Area: Black Mountains Distance: 6miles (10km). Grade: Moderate+
Walk Description: Beginning from another market town, Crickhowell, we climb gently up to an unusual ancient hill fort called Grug Howell with its distinctive flat top, ‘table mountain’ appearance. After a stop to admire the surroundings, we ascend the white, limestone covered summit of Pen Cerrig-Calch.(701m), and if time allows, we could take in the peak of Pen Allt Mawr (719m).
Date: Sunday 8th Walk: The Skirrid Area: Black Mountains Distance: 5miles (10km). Grade: Easy
Walk Description: Starting from a layby on the B4521 we’ll make a nice easy circuit and an ascent of the unusual hill known as the Skirrid, near Abergavenny. Great views over the Usk Valley.
Date: Thursday 12th Walk: A Coastal Walk Area: Vale of Glamorgan Distance: 6miles (10km). Grade: Easy
Walk Description: Beginning in the old town of Llantwit Major the walk takes us along the cliffs to St Donats with its world famous Atlantic College. We carry on along the cliffs to the lighthouse at Nash point before heading inland for a pub lunch at Marcross. The return is across open country and fields back to Llantwit major.
Date: Sunday 15th August Walk: Classic Waterfalls Walk Area Western Beacons Distance: 12miles (20km). Grade: Moderate
Walk Description: This is our classic walk through the gorges of the Nedd, Hepste & Mellte rivers where the paths lead through lovely areas of broadleaf woodland and raging torrents and waterfalls. Be prepared to get a little damp though, as we’ll actually walk behind one of the most beautiful, Sgwd Yr Eira or ‘waterfall of Snow’ in English !
Date: Thursday 19 August. Walk: Ascent of Pen Y Fan. Area: Brecon Beacons Distance: 8miles (12km). Grade: Energetic
Walk Description: This walk takes us to the summit of the highest peak in South Wales, Pen Y Fan, (886m). It involves a rather long, steady climb but the views are certainly worth it if the weather is kind. The walk also takes in some of the spectacular ridges in the Beacons area.
Date: Sunday 22nd Walk: Twmbarlwm Forest Walk Area: Valleys Ridges. Distance: 6miles (10km). Grade: Moderate.
Walk Description: On this walk we do a circular walk along the ridge between the Eastern& Western Valleys and taking in a wonderful viewpoint from an ancient hill fort called Twmbarlwm, returning through the woodlands to our starting point at Cwmcarn Visitors centre for tea and cakes.
Date: Thursday 26th Walk: Around Cowbridge Area: Vale of Glamorgan Distance: 7miles (10km). Grade: easy.
Walk Description: Beginning from the ancient market town of Cowbridge this gentle walk takes through the lovely vale countryside and onto the Stalling Down before wending our way back to Cowbridge for a tea or something stronger in the old Bear Hotel.
Date: Sunday 29th Walk: Castell Coch Area: Rumney Valley Ridgeway: 8miles (10km). Grade: Moderate.
This walk begins and ends at the 19th century, ‘fairy tale’ castle of Castell Coch, just north of Cardiff and built by the 3rd Marquess of Bute. Part of the walk takes us along the Rumney Valley ridgeway, with its views over Cardiff to the South and Caerphilly and the valleys running to the north.
The price of each walk is £30 per person, with discounted rates for four or more persons, including transport to and from the walk.
We meet in on the front steps of the National Museum in central Cardiff and you can pay on the day, however, would you please give a quick phone call or email prior to the walk so we know numbers for transport arrangements and can confirm your place etc. (For those who wish to use their own vehicle, a price reduction will be made to cover their transport costs to and from the walk)
Please try to have boots or sturdy walking shoes and try to avoid wearing jeans if possible and of course, bring along a waterproof jacket; remember, this is Wales and it’s sometimes wet !!!
